Optical Spectroscopy Solutions

We offer consulting and contract R&D services to customers who have optical spectroscopy measurement challenges. Our team has extensive experience in various aspects of the spectroscopic measurement process.

Our Services

  1. Development of mathematical methods for the removal from spectra of the effects of the spectroscopic technique used to acquire the spectra.
  2. Providing custom instrumentation to enable spectral acquisition from a wide range of non-standard samples and/or spectral acquisition under non-standard circumstances.

Mathematical Methods

Examples of developments of mathematical methods include:

  • removal of interference fringes from the spectra of thin films acquired in transmission
  • transforms for linearizing the concentration dependence of normal incidence reflection spectra
  • transforms to linearize concentration dependence of diffuse reflection, internal reflection and emission spectra

A spectrum is the result of both the properties of a sample and the spectroscopic technique employed. Linearizing transforms are developed to remove the effects of the spectroscopic technique, leaving only the effects of the sample. By removing the effects of a spectroscopic technique, and by employing linearizing transform prior to implementing a particular chemometric method, the performance of a chemometric method can be significantly improved. That is so because the chemometric methods rest on the assumption that the changes in concentrations of components in the sample affect spectra proportionally to the changes in the concentrations. While the chemometric methods are generally designed to tolerate a degree of nonlinearity, they usually perform the better the closer the linearity assumption is fulfilled.

Custom Instrumentation

Our expertise in the development of customized instrumentation rests on over 30 years of experience and many hundreds of such custom products designed and manufactured. Over the years, our team has built and perfected an exceptionally large toolbox of ready-to-go solutions for a wide range of different spectroscopic challenges.

Our solutions cover a broad spectral range, encompassing UV, VIS, NIR, mid-IR and far-IR, and include devices for transmission, specular reflection, diffuse reflection, internal reflection and emission spectroscopic techniques. In addition, our solutions further include various types of custom instrumentation for fluorescence and Raman spectroscopies.

As well as developing instruments for all types of optical spectroscopy, our team has also developed many imaging devices. Sometimes these imaging devices are used in conjunction with spectroscopic instrumentation and sometimes on their own.

Although in some cases our clients chose to acknowledge the involvement of our team through publishing research papers, or obtaining patents, it is our policy never to discuss any specifics of our work or who our clients are and/or were, thus retaining full confidentiality.
